Mary Did You Know

I make full confession that I rarely watch The Voice on NBC. I enjoy it when I do, I just don’t have the commitment to watching any show regularly. My feed on Facebook was flooded with one topic last night: Jordan Smith singing ‘Mary, Did You Know?’

The Voice 2015 Jordan Smith – Finale: “Mary, Did You Know”

I like to include the lyrics with music that I post because I believe words are powerful. For this post I am adding a link to something unique I found that I hope you appreciate as much as I did. Mark Lowry is the author of the song, and when I found the lyrics posted on one site, they included a hyperlink for each line of the song that links to a verse of the Bible for reference. This is worth checking out even if you know all the words…trust me!

Joy in the beginning – My Diagnosis of MS

Overwhelmed By Joy's avatarOverwhelmedByJoy

I was officially diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis on Thursday, June 26th, around 5 pm. Or somewhere in that time frame. Who’s counting, right? I recently came across my journal from that period in time, a significant document to me because it recounts where I was at in my walk with the Lord, how I responded, and my reaction upon being diagnosed.

I had not recognized any signs or symptoms of my illness at the time. I would be in probably the 1% of all people diagnosed. I went to my PCP on Wednesday evening, June 25th, for a work-in appointment. He recognized some neurological difficulties, and I had an appointment the next day with a neurologist. That evening, after many, many tests, my life and my family’s life changed forever. But I will get back to that in later posts.

I had an entry dated May 2, 1997

Or so the saying goes. I’m on target, but it’s like cruising down a placid river taking in the sights.

Until you hit the rapids.

That’s what it feels like, that there’s an impending disaster. I know how fatalist it sounds, but many times in the past when everything is going right, it’s too good to be true.

But…

I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.

In the meantine, after writing today’s quota, i go back over the first ten chapters of part three, and making some adjustments.

Now I feel better, and can continue writing to the plan.

For now it’s so far so good.

Is this really English … American?

aloysius5's avatarThrills, Spills, and just a dash of Romance

Ever since I heard Ray Romano say, in an episode of his TV show when they visited Italy, ‘does anyone here speak American?’ I’ve often wondered if, being an English speaker, there were two very distinct different versions of the language.

Spelling wise, there is.

You say color, I say colour, you know the sort of thing.

But then there are words like ‘heater’.

Yes, like a lot of people I thought the word means a device that warms you up in winter, or when it’s cold.

Apparently not, and this is where it pays to know a little about the American language, though maybe not necessarily that one Ray was talking about.

For instance, a heater – is a gun apparently, and an expression used often during the 1930s through 1950s, particularly in films.

Quite loses all of its magic though when you yell out to your friend, throw…

So, I’m sitting down and having a quiet drink when…

aloysius5's avatarThrills, Spills, and just a dash of Romance

There’s nothing more I like to do at the end of a day than sit down and have a drink, usually Scotch and Soda or Bacardi and Coke.

But that’s the problem.

What is your definition of the end of the day?

No doubt for most it is probably that time when they get home from work, and take some time between then and dinner.  From my memories of American sitcoms of the 1950s, it was over Sherry and included a summary from every one of their day.

It was a time when women, apparently, preferred to stay home than go to work.  Odd, for some reason, that Hollywood would ignore the hard-won rights of women to have jobs, though some might argue out of necessity because of the war.

There was no computer games, contrary children, and that period, for the children was between coming home from school (doing…
