Friends

I have been reflecting on several great friends that I have had in my life.

Steve and I were born on the same day…five years apart.  He and I, along with some other young men that attended our church, shared a house for about one year.

Steve is just a great guy.  Nine months after I began at SIU Building Services…Steve was hired there as well.

At one time, Steve and I, were to poor to pay attention.

A had a terrible automobile accident, in the village of Elkville, many years ago.  Within minutes…there was Steve…at the scene…to ensure that I was alright and provide moral support.

Jeff, is another great and lifelong friend.

I met Jeff about the time that I met Steve…in the early 1970’s.  Jeff was a hippie and lived in a hippie commune that was off of the Elkville blacktop.  When I first saw him…I mistook…

Life’s Balance

I was just speaking with my friend of many years and we agreed that it is good to get away from work, from time to time.

Upon my retirement, January 1, 2011, I was repeatedly asked for the first three or more years…what I was doing for work now that I had retired?

I often responded that if I had wanted to continue working…I would have stayed at SIU…as it was my dream job.

Since my earliest days of employment at Southern Illinois University I had looked forward to the day that I could retire and pursue other interests…prior to the big sleep.

I have watched many of my colleagues retire at 65 or 70…or beyond…and witnessed them pass away within a year or less of their retirement.

Other of my friends have told me that work was all that made their life meaningful and that without it they would…

The Fall of the Land of Lincoln

Although I was born is Chicago, Illinois my family moved back to Southern Illinois when I was five years old.  We moved to Eldorado, Illinois where I attended both Grade School and High School.  My first encounter with Southern Illinois University came when Theatre students came from the Carbondale Campus and performed a Play for our little school…probably about the time I was in first or second grade.  I was awe struck with the performers talent and skill and their beautiful singing.  It must have been a musical.  I determined at that very young age that SIU must be a very special place indeed!

Later it was my good fortune to be employed at SIU in Carbondale.  As I watched many first generation college students have their lives changed by the transforming miracle of higher education…I experienced my life changing as well!

I observed first hand the open door of…

5 Ways the Death of Jesus Saves You

Scripture tells us Jesus Christ died, was buried and rose the third day! We also know through Scripture that the dead in Christ will be raised up, and those who are alive at His coming will be changed and receive new, glorified bodies (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). Both the death and resurrection of Jesus is important. It proves who Jesus is. It demonstrates that God accepted Jesus’s sacrifice on our behalf. It shows that God has the power to raise us from the dead. It guarantees that the bodies of those who believe in Christ will not remain dead but will be resurrected into eternal life.

As Christians, we know that Jesus died on a cross but do you ever wonder how His death saves you? Scripture tells us that when Jesus shed His…

Is it OK for Christians to Wear a Cross?

Child Of God's avatarFrom The Darkness Into The Light

We see the cross in churches and steeples, hanging in homes and, worn around the necks of many Christians; however, many don’t know what the cross means. There is also much debate as to whether or not it is appropriate – or even sinful – to wear religious jewelry like crosses and crucifixes. In order to understand whether or not it is ok for Christians to wear the cross, we have to understand the history of the cross and what the cross really means, particularly in our own lives.

Christians did not begin wearing the cross around their necks until after the crucifixion was no longer the primary source of capital punishment; therefore, it is not equivalent to a modern-day person wearing a miniature death symbol as some have suggested. Many look at the cross as simply the instrument of…
