Momentary Lapse Of Sanity 
From outside, but from public service where I could face attacks by the public, or ruin a person’s life by a bad judgement and having to deal with unpleasant folk this much I know to be so:
(a). If you screw up at your job a colleague will suffer in some way or will have to clean up after you. (Cleaned up and screwed up in my careers).
(b) Everyone has a choice. Sometimes you have to help them to see it
(c) If The Public and Govt wish for the public service to be the one they dream of, don’t expect it to be done on the cheap. Train those who work in it to the highest degree. Don’t drag at them with needless internal form filling & targets. Remember they are people, who hurt and are not always saints; if they stumble support them and ‘repair’ them (the few who are proven ass-holes; ditch ’em for the sake of the others).
(d) When the public scream in your face and the press pick you as target of the week, stand strong and remember without you they’d be going to Hell in a hand-cart (without wheels).
