New Paper: Could the Carnivore Diet Revolutionize Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Treatment? https://frontiersin.org/journals/nutrition/articles/10.3389/fnut.2024.1467475/full…
In a case series of 10 patients with IBD, either ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease, all 10 saw major clinical improvements on a carnivore-ketogenic diet.
Patients exhibited a mean increase in IBDQ-32 score (higher is better) from 95 to 216 out of a possible 224 points, indicating clinical remission.
Patients are off all medications for IBD.
The Biological Plausibility
Ketogenic and carnivore diets increase ketone levels, which is linked to reduced IBD activity in prior studies. There may also be positive effects on the stem cell niche, in the intestines. Finally, low-fiber diets may therapeutically impact gut microbiota metabolism, also as shown previously. Sample patient quotes…
Patient 1: “A keto-carnivore diet let me forget that I have Crohn’s. No drugs, no surgery… The decades that I dealt with Crohn’s are like another lifetime.”
Patient 3: “Within days my bowel movement changed from loose to normal! And within two weeks I had more energy than I did the past 10 years. When I last spoke with my doctor he said that if I’m feeling incredible he does not want to put me on the medication. And that was so encouraging! Especially since he has been really skeptical of the diet.”
Patient 6: “Carnivore seems limiting at first, but it’s actually freeing.”
Patient 10: “My carnivore-ketogenic diet healed it all! After over 20 years, I’m disease and medication free! I was told that diet could not help me, but I guarantee you it helped. I lived it. I will never buy another candy bar again. And that’s something because I love sweets, but not as much as I love feeling this way.”
Could this be the future of IBD treatment? We need to invest in more research to find out. Let’s do that! For more, read the study and watch the video abstract on YouTube. https://youtu.be/JJQCwsy_yM8 Ht/ co-author
@AdrianSotoMota#IBD#Health#GutHealth#CarnivoreDiet#KetogenicDiet#Research P.S. People will strawman this work. I encourage you to read the paper, including all patients’ powerful stories, and watch the video abstract to hear what arguments are actually being made. This isn’t about diet tribalism… it’s about pursuing curiosity and progressing research to help suffering people.
