Straight up magic!

“Straight up magic!” is how Jerrad Kelly explained what he experienced after abruptly going from paramedic to trauma patient last April. Jerrad was thrown off his motorcycle at full speed on a foggy morning on his way to work. After landing on a concrete round-about, the next thing he remembered was his Warrensburg EMS team from Johnson County Ambulance District surrounding him doing what they do, and transporting him to Research Medical Center.

RMC ER and neuroscience physicians determined his spine was fractured in several places so complex neurosurgery was next – six hours in the OR.

Jerrad shares that the remains of his mangled full-face helmet are a reminder the accident could have taken his life.

After 25 days in Research’s Neuroscience Institute and Rehabilitation Center, Jerrad went back to work last summer.

“Dr. Basta is a rock star! This neurosurgeon rebuilt my spine and then coached me through some tough days of recovery.”

Jerrad visited Research Medical Center this week to share his story and thank his care team, including his JCAD first responders and trauma surgeon Dr. Simpson.
