sparkPopular vernacular around dating and love is full of catchphrases like “the spark,” “butterflies,” and “chemistry,” all used to describe a feeling you have with another person that indicates that they’re “the one.” What is that feeling, exactly? Can it be trusted? Does it change over time? Is it even real?

When we’re dating in search of a relationship, we’re looking for a feeling that hits us the moment we meet someone. If you’re using a dating site or app, you hope that the photos and electronic communication translate to that feeling in person. If you meet at a social event, it’s probably that feeling that leads you to pursue dating each other. If that feeling wanes or is missing, maybe you break things off so you can keep looking for it.
