“Ferguson”

Ferguson

Ferguson…

The crowd began to grow
In the street and along the sidewalks
Everyone longing for peace
But knowing in their hearts
That there would soon be
Blood running like rain
Along the curb…

The decision was final…
Announced on the news…
No indictment was going to happen
No justice for the crime…
If in fact there was a crime

What options presented themselves
To those who felt wronged?
Peacefulness had accomplished nothing…
Violence was all that remained…

The police couldn’t change fate
The protesters unable to change
The outcome…
The media unwillingly encouraging
The rage of those in their sadness

A car burns in flames of revenge
The store front windows lie
Crumbled on the sidewalk
While so many take advantage
Of the situation…

What will be in the news
On the morning shows?
How many injured?
How many killed?
How many suffering…

The loss of a friendship.

wordsaredeadly's avatarWords Are Deadly

today we gather in silence

as we bury the past relationship we once had

throw the memories in the grave

as dirt made of elapsed time suffocates it all

we stand and mourn but never make a sound

choking our cries with vengeance

my heart will break tonight

as I recall this memory

your foot steps leaving me behind

on the tombstone only one word can be read

a word so powerful that tears flow through my sad eyes

goodbye

Learning to Speak the Language of Love

Lily's avatarLily Ellyn

“Thankfulness is not some sort of magic formula; it is the language of love…”

A friend shared this quote with me recently and I can’t stop thinking about it. I’m completely taken with this picture of thankfulness as the language of love. I think that’s both beautiful and true.

I’m not always good at loving well –not my husband, not my friends and family, not God, and certainly not strangers. There are many moments in my life I look back on and wish I’d loved better.

The more I think about these words, the more I’m coming to believe that gratitude is an essential part of love. I’ve seen how this works in my marriage.

Jonathan and I have been together for almost eight years and while I don’t pretend that we’re perfect, one of my favorite things about our relationship is the way we still thank each other for everything…
